Academics elected as Fellows of the Learned Society of Wales.

Two Îá°®³Ô¹Ï academics elected as Fellows of the Learned Society of Wales.

The Learned Society of Wales announced the results of its 2014 Election of new Fellows this week.  Of the forty three new Fellows, two were from Îá°®³Ô¹Ï – Professor James Scourse from the School of Ocean Sciences and Professor Nigel John from the School of Computer Science.

Professor James Scourse said: “"Science is very much a social and communal effort. I'm really delighted and honoured to be receiving this Fellowship but much of the accolade must go to my friends, colleagues and above all research students in the School of Ocean Sciences with whom I have been incredibly fortunate to work with since 1985. The Fellowship is as much for them as it is for me. The Îá°®³Ô¹Ï School of Ocean Sciences is a wonderful place to do marine science."

Professor Nigel John from the School of Computer Science said: “It was a fantastic opportunity for me to come back to the country of my birth when I joined Îá°®³Ô¹Ï in 2003. The support that I have had from the University over the last decade has undoubtedly been a huge factor in my election to the Learned Society of Wales. I'm very honoured to receive this accolade and thank all of my research collaborators and students for their contributions."

Sir John Cadogan, the Society’s President, said: “We have once again elected a further very strong cohort of new Fellows, to add to the existing list of excellent Founding Fellows and Fellows.  Over the coming years, our Fellowship will continue to grow by election judged by peer review.  To be elected will continue to be a target for our young scholars.â€

Election to Fellowship of the Learned Society of Wales is via nomination by existing Fellows.  It is open to men and women of all ages and from all ethnic groups who have a demonstrable record of excellence and achievement in any of the academic disciplines or who, being members of the professions, the arts, industry, commerce or public service, have made a distinguished contribution to the world of learning; and who are resident in Wales, or who are persons of Welsh birth but are resident elsewhere, or who otherwise have a particular connection with Wales.
