This landmark event brought together students at all levels, from first-year undergraduates to PhD researchers, providing a platform for them to present their ideas and research. The conference schedule featured a rich array of papers exploring philosophy, mythology, and popular culture, showcasing the departments commitment to fostering creativity and academic excellence.
The day began with a warm welcome under the whimsical title, Long, Long Ago in a Gwynedd Far, Far Away色 From there, students dived into diverse topics, including divinity in The Elder Scrolls, feminist perspectives in fantasy, and the existential ethics of Spider-Man.
Reflecting on the event, Dr Gareth Evans-Jones, co-organizer, shared:
This was a significant opportunity for our students to engage with a dynamic theme and present insightful papers in a safe and supportive environment. The afternoon was fascinating, and Im grateful to everyone who participated.
Student Perspectives
For many students, the conference was an invaluable experience. Megan Keen, a third-year undergraduate, participated in a panel on feminism in fantasy. Megan remarked: As someone anxious about public speaking, this was a fantastic opportunity to practice in a comfortable space on a topic Im passionate about. Im so proud of everyone who took part!
Jack Lowes, a first-year BA student, delivered an engaging paper on The Joker through a Nietzschean lens. He commented: It was amazing to hear so many different philosophical perspectives. The ideas were abstract and fascinating, and I learned so much about topics Id never considered before.
Celebrating Collaboration and Creativity
From comparative creation myths to the Christian themes in The Lord of the Rings, the conference demonstrated the depth and diversity of student research within the department. The supportive atmosphere encouraged meaningful dialogue, leaving both presenters and attendees inspired.
The department looks forward to continuing this tradition, providing future cohorts with the chance to explore bold ideas, share their passions, and gain valuable academic experience.
