Overview

In this module, you'll be introduced to design methodology, processes, and techniques, fostering a foundational understanding of the subject. The program emphasizes the practical application of design principles by challenging students to develop real-world solutions to specified problems. Prototypes are highlighted as crucial design tools, addressing both aesthetic and functional aspects. Additionally, you will gain proficiency in design software for two and three dimensions, enhancing their digital design skills. Safety protocols in workshop environments and proficiency with basic tools are prioritized to ensure secure operations. Practical skills in model making, including cardboard prototyping, plastic prototype creation through 3D printing, and working with sheet materials and laser cutters are integral parts of the curriculum. Furthermore, the coursework delves into considerations relevant to industrial processes and bureau services, providing a well-rounded understanding of the design field.

Indicative content includes:

  • Introduction to design methodology, process and techniques.
  • Developing a real-world solution to a given problem.
  • Prototypes as design tools (looks-like, works-like).
  • Introduction to design software for two and three dimensions.
  • Operating safely in the workshop environment with basic tools.
  • Low-fidelity prototyping in cardboard.
  • High-fidelity virtual CAD prototypes.
  • High-fidelity prototypes manufactured using 3D printing and laser cutting of sheet material.
  • Considerations for industrial process and bureau services.

Assessment Strategy

-threshold -Equivalent to 50%.Uses key areas of theory or knowledge to meet the Learning Outcomes of the module. Is able to formulate an appropriate solution to accurately solve tasks and questions. Can identify individual aspects, but lacks an awareness of links between them and the wider contexts. Outputs can be understood, but lack structure and/or coherence.

-good -Equivalent to the range 60%-69%.Is able to analyse a task or problem to decide which aspects of theory and knowledge to apply. Solutions are of a workable quality, demonstrating understanding of underlying principles. Major themes can be linked appropriately but may not be able to extend this to individual aspects. Outputs are readily understood, with an appropriate structure but may lack sophistication.

-excellent -Equivalent to the range 70%+.Assemble critically evaluated, relevant areas of knowledge and theory to constuct professional-level solutions to tasks and questions presented. Is able to cross-link themes and aspects to draw considered conclusions. Presents outputs in a cohesive, accurate, and efficient manner.

Learning Outcomes

  • Combine different aspects to understand a design process, including the role of the prototype, how design processes impact on a complete product lifecycle and how innovation leads to commercial value.

  • Create 3D rapid-prototypes using appropriate methods and soft materials.

  • Design digital models in 3D CAD.

  • Produce physical prototypes using digital manufacturing techniques, including 3D printing and laser cutting.

CAD Workbook Students follow and complete the set exercises in Blackboard, then complete the extension task assigned to each of the 6 exercises. The outputs (screen shots) are pasted into the digital workbook as evidence. The completed workbook is submitted to Blackboard for marking.

Description

High-fidelity project. Following training on CAD software and the relevant pieces of prototyping equipment, select a 'defined problem' from a list of briefs. Develop a prototype solution using CAD, 3D printing, kit parts and laser cutting. The manufactured artefact should be of high quality, be fully functional and solve the chosen problem.
